What makes packaging genuinely eco-friendly?
The term "eco-friendly" on packaging is legally meaningless without a specific, verifiable claim behind it. Under the FTC Green Guides (USA) and the EU Green Claims Directive, generic environmental claims that cannot be substantiated are misleading — and regulators are increasingly enforcing this.
Genuinely sustainable packaging achieves environmental benefit through one or more of the following: certified responsible fibre sourcing (FSC or SFI), recycled content (post-consumer or post-industrial fibre), recyclability (accepted in curbside programmes without special infrastructure), low-impact inks (soy-based or water-based rather than petroleum), or reduced material use through right-sizing.
At CustomBoxesLabs, every sustainability option comes with documentation — FSC chain-of-custody certificates, recycled content percentages, or ink specification sheets — so the claims you make on your packaging and in your marketing are verifiable. We do not sell "eco-friendly" as a brand attribute. We sell specific, documented material specifications.

Sustainable packaging formats
Every format below is available with FSC-certified substrates, recycled content options, and soy-based inks. Specific sustainability credentials are confirmed in your 48-hour quote.
Unbleached kraft corrugated and paperboard — the format most immediately associated with sustainable packaging by consumers. The brown material communicates natural, minimal, and unprocessed before any text is read. Available in mailer boxes, shipping cartons, folding cartons, and rigid boxes. Natural kraft liner uses fewer chemical processing steps than bleached white liner.
Standard corrugated mailer boxes manufactured with recycled-content liner — CRB (clay-coated recycled board) or recycled kraft liner. Post-consumer recycled fibre content typically 60–80%. Print quality is slightly reduced versus virgin white liner, which is acceptable for most branded applications and preferred by eco-positioned brands. FSC Recycled certification available.
RSC and custom shipping boxes manufactured from recycled-content corrugated board. CRB medium and recycled liners maintain ECT structural performance (32–51 ECT) equivalent to virgin corrugated for most applications. The most common sustainable packaging transition for e-commerce and wholesale brands — typically cost-neutral or cost-saving versus virgin corrugated.
SBS or CRB folding cartons with FSC-certified substrate, water-based barrier coating (instead of PE for food applications), and soy-based inks. Water-based barrier coatings maintain food-contact performance while keeping the carton curbside recyclable — PE-coated cartons are not. The correct specification for food and personal care brands with recyclability commitments and retail distribution.
Premium rigid boxes manufactured with FSC-certified greyboard and FSC-certified wrap paper. The luxury packaging format with documented responsible sourcing — the combination required by prestige retailers and corporate gifting programmes with sustainability procurement requirements. Soft-touch laminate and foil stamping are available with FSC-certified substrates throughout.
PLA-based flexible pouches certified to industrial composting standards (EN 13432 / ASTM D6400). Correct for food brands, supplements, and personal care products where the product requires flexible film packaging and the brand's customer base has access to industrial composting infrastructure. Not suitable as a general sustainability upgrade — compostable claims require verifiable end-of-life infrastructure. Read the full compostable guide.
What sustainable packaging actually costs
The most common concern about switching to sustainable packaging is cost. Some transitions are genuinely cost-neutral or cheaper. Others carry a real premium. Here is the accurate picture.
Cost vs virgin corrugated: −5% to +5%. Often cheaper at equivalent ECT ratings. The easiest and most cost-effective sustainable transition for most e-commerce and wholesale brands. No lead time impact.
Cost premium vs non-certified: +5–15%. Applies across all paper formats. Justified when your retail channel requires it or when the FSC mark is a commercial differentiator with your customers. Verifiable, documented, and audited.
Cost premium vs PE coating: +15–25%. Makes food cartons curbside recyclable (PE-coated cartons are not). Justified for brands with recyclability commitments who sell in food or personal care categories.
Cost premium vs petroleum inks: ±0–5%. At CustomBoxesLabs, soy-based inks are available across all formats at no premium — specify in your quote request.
Cost vs white-liner corrugated: ±0–10%. Often cheaper due to reduced liner processing. No meaningful cost premium. Strongest consumer-facing sustainability visual signal available at no additional cost.
Cost premium vs conventional flexible film: +30–80%. The most expensive sustainable packaging transition. Justified only when your product genuinely requires flexible film packaging and your customers have documented access to industrial composting infrastructure.

Which sustainability claims are legally defensible
Regulators in the USA (FTC Green Guides), UK (CMA Green Claims Code), and EU (Green Claims Directive) are actively enforcing against unqualified sustainability claims. Use specific, verifiable language.
"Made from FSC-certified paperboard" · "80% post-consumer recycled content" · "Curbside recyclable" · "Printed with soy-based inks" · "EN 13432 certified compostable in industrial composting conditions within 180 days." These are specific, documentable, and compliant with current regulatory guidance in all major markets.
"Compostable" — only without qualification if home compostable. Industrial compost only must say so. · "Biodegradable" — must specify conditions and timeframe. · "Recyclable" — only where accepted in curbside programmes in the markets you sell in. · "Carbon neutral" — requires third-party certification, not a self-declaration.
"Eco-friendly" (unspecified) · "Environmentally friendly" · "Green" · "Sustainable" without qualification · "Natural" applied to packaging materials without meaning · "Biodegradable" without conditions and timeframe. These are the claims most likely to attract regulatory attention and consumer complaints under current and emerging legislation.
