// DEFINITION

What is a custom kraft box?

A custom kraft box is a packaging box made from kraft paperboard — paper produced using the kraft pulping process, which converts wood chips into strong, durable paper pulp using a chemical treatment. The word “kraft” comes from the German and Swedish word for strength, and it reflects the material’s defining property: kraft paperboard is significantly stronger than conventional wood-free paper at the same caliper, because the kraft process preserves more of the cellulose fiber’s natural tensile strength.

Natural kraft paperboard is left unbleached after pulping, giving it its characteristic warm brown color. That brown color is not a limitation — it is the brand signal. For artisan food companies, organic personal care brands, natural supplement makers, Etsy sellers, and eco-conscious DTC businesses, the natural brown of kraft communicates exactly the brand values their customers are buying: authenticity, sustainability, and restraint. The packaging doesn’t need to shout. The material says it.

The global kraft box market was valued at $12.6 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $18.8 billion by 2034, driven by the accelerating shift from plastic to paper-based packaging and the growth of e-commerce brands that want sustainable packaging without sacrificing structural performance.

At CustomBoxesLabs, we engineer custom kraft boxes in three substrate grades — natural unbleached, bleached white, and recycled kraft — and five structural styles, from kraft mailer boxes to kraft gable boxes. All available from 1 unit with no minimum order and no setup fees.

// KRAFT GRADES

3 Kraft Paperboard Grades

The kraft grade determines the color of your box, the print options available, the recycled content level, and the brand signal the packaging communicates. This is the foundational material decision — and it determines everything that follows.

GRADE_01 · MOST POPULAR
Natural Kraft

Unbleached kraft paperboard in its natural warm brown color — the defining visual of artisan, organic, and eco-positioned brands. Natural kraft is the strongest kraft grade: the absence of bleaching preserves more cellulose fiber, giving the board higher tensile strength per gram than bleached equivalents. The color communicates sustainability and authenticity without a single word of copy. It is the correct grade for brands where the packaging’s material itself is the brand statement.

Print limitation: full CMYK on natural brown produces muddy, inaccurate colors. The correct print approach is 1–2 color print (black, one brand color, or white ink) or no print at all. White ink printing on natural kraft creates a distinctive high-contrast aesthetic that photographs exceptionally well for e-commerce product shots.

Best for: Artisan food, organic personal care, natural supplements, Etsy sellers, eco-conscious DTC, zero-waste brands
1–2 color · white ink · no print
GRADE_02 · FULL COLOR
Bleached Kraft

Kraft paperboard that has been whitened through a bleaching process to produce a bright white printing surface, while retaining the structural strength advantages of kraft construction. Bleached kraft delivers the same full-color CMYK print fidelity as standard SBS paperboard, but in a kraft substrate that is stronger at equivalent caliper. Bleached kraft is the correct specification when a brand wants kraft’s structural performance — or its recyclability and FSC positioning — but requires white-background full-color printing for their brand identity.

Bleached kraft is the most versatile kraft grade: it bridges the gap between natural kraft’s eco positioning and SBS’s print performance, making it accessible to brands that need both.

Best for: Brands needing full-color print on a kraft substrate, premium natural brands, sustainable packaging with complex artwork
Full-color CMYK · Pantone PMS · all finishes
GRADE_03 · HIGHEST ECO CREDENTIAL
Recycled Kraft

Kraft paperboard manufactured from post-consumer recycled fibers rather than virgin wood pulp. The recycled fiber composition gives the board a distinctive speckled, slightly grey-brown color that communicates recycled content authentically — brands that specify recycled kraft are visually signaling their material sourcing, not just claiming it in copy. Recycled kraft earns the strongest sustainability certifications (FSC, SFI, PCW recycled content) and is the correct specification for brands whose primary packaging credential is recycled content.

Trade-off: recycled kraft has slightly lower tensile strength than natural virgin kraft due to the shorter recycled fiber length, and its color and texture can vary between production runs. Structural applications requiring precise dimensional consistency are better served by natural or bleached grades.

Best for: Brands prioritizing maximum recycled content, FSC certification, circular economy positioning, zero-waste retail
1–2 color · limited CMYK

// BOX STYLES

5 Custom Kraft Box Styles

All five structural styles are available in natural, bleached, and recycled kraft grades. The style determines how the box ships, how it assembles, and how the product is accessed at the moment of opening.

STYLE_01
Kraft Mailer Box

Corrugated kraft mailer box for DTC and e-commerce shipping. Self-locking tab closure, ships flat, full exterior print capability. The most structurally robust kraft box format for transit.

Best for: DTC shipping, subscription boxes, e-commerce
STYLE_02
Tuck-End Box

The standard kraft retail packaging format — straight-tuck or reverse-tuck closure in kraft paperboard. The most widely used kraft box style for soap, cosmetics, food, and artisan product retail packaging.

Best for: Soap, cosmetics, artisan food, supplements, retail
STYLE_03
Auto-Bottom Box

Pre-glued snap-lock bottom with tuck top. The correct kraft box style for heavier products — soap bars, food items, bottled products — where base integrity under load is critical. Faster assembly than tuck-end at scale.

Best for: Heavy products, food jars, candles, batch production
STYLE_04
Pillow Box

Curved, die-cut kraft box that assembles into a distinctive pillow shape — a popular gift packaging format for small products like jewelry, accessories, candles, and confectionery where the packaging silhouette itself is the brand differentiation strategy.

Best for: Jewelry, small gifts, confectionery, accessories
STYLE_05
Gable Box

Peaked roof, handled kraft gable box for gifting, food, and retail display applications. The built-in handle makes it a complete carry-ready package — ideal for baked goods, confectionery, small hampers, and branded event giveaways.

Best for: Baked goods, confectionery, gifting, events

This is the most common over-specified area in kraft box ordering. Understanding what print options work on each grade prevents artwork rejection, production delays, and disappointed results. Read this before submitting artwork.

NATURAL KRAFT · BROWN BASE
What works on natural kraft
1-color black print — logos, text, and simple line art in black. Highest contrast, most legible, most common kraft print approach.
1-color brand color — a single Pantone spot color for brand identity. Works well with earth tones, greens, and muted palettes that complement the brown base.
White ink — produces high contrast against the brown base. Distinctive aesthetic, especially effective for logo marks and typography. Requires a dedicated white ink print pass.
No print — the brown board itself is the design. A stamp, sticker, or label applied post-production achieves branding without committing to a full print run.
Full CMYK — not recommended. Cyan, magenta, and yellow inks on a brown substrate produce muddy, desaturated results. Colors will not match your screen or SBS proofs.
Photographic images — avoid. Photo reproduction on natural kraft is inaccurate and unpredictable due to the brown substrate absorbing ink differently across the sheet.
BLEACHED KRAFT · WHITE BASE
What works on bleached kraft
Full-color CMYK — the white base supports full-color printing with the same fidelity as standard SBS paperboard. All CMYK artwork, photography, and complex brand graphics work correctly.
Pantone PMS — spot color matching available for brand-critical colors that require consistent reproduction.
All surface finishes — matte laminate, gloss laminate, soft-touch, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing. The white base supports all finish options available on standard SBS.
Photographic images — accurate reproduction on the white substrate. Product photography and lifestyle imagery reproduce correctly.
RECYCLED KRAFT · SPECKLED BASE
What works on recycled kraft
1–2 color print — black, white, or one brand color. The speckled grey-brown substrate creates a distinctive texture that communicates recycled content visually.
Minimalist branding — logos, wordmarks, and simple line art work well. The substrate texture becomes part of the visual identity.
Full CMYK — limited. More capable than natural kraft due to whiter fibers, but color accuracy is lower than bleached kraft. Test with a prototype before committing to a production run.
Color-to-color consistency — recycled kraft can vary slightly between production batches due to the variable composition of post-consumer fibers. Note this if tight batch consistency is required.
Always order a prototype before committing to a print run on kraft.
Print on kraft is substrate-dependent in ways that don’t apply to standard white paperboard. A single-unit prototype at your exact dimensions and grade lets you validate color, contrast, and finish before full production. Our minimum order is 1 unit — there is no reason not to. Submit your quote request with prototype noted.

Custom Kraft Boxes by Industry

Kraft boxes serve a specific buyer — the brand that wants its packaging material to carry a sustainability or authenticity signal without relying on green marketing copy. Here is the correct specification by industry.

Artisan Food & Organic Brands

The largest kraft box buyer category. Artisan bakeries, organic food producers, hot sauce brands, spice companies, and specialty food DTC businesses use natural kraft tuck-end and auto-bottom boxes as primary retail packaging. The unbleached brown communicates handmade quality and natural ingredients authentically — a positioning signal that white SBS packaging cannot replicate regardless of what it says. Specify 16pt natural kraft with 1-color black print or white ink for maximum brand authenticity.

Food & beverage packaging guide
Natural Personal Care & Soap

Handmade soap makers, natural skincare brands, zero-waste personal care companies, and organic cosmetics sold through Etsy, farmers markets, and independent retail use kraft tuck-end and pillow boxes as their primary packaging format. The kraft box is one of the few packaging formats that attracts consumers actively choosing products based on packaging material — 77% of consumers in a recent study stated sustainable packaging influences their purchasing decisions. Natural kraft with minimal black print is the standard specification.

Cosmetics packaging guide
E-Commerce & Subscription DTC

DTC brands shipping direct to consumers use kraft mailer boxes to communicate sustainability credentials at the moment of delivery. Natural kraft mailer boxes do not require a branded exterior print to make a brand statement — the material itself is the message for sustainability-positioned brands. For brands that want printed branding on kraft, specify bleached kraft mailer boxes for full-color exterior print with kraft’s structural performance and recycled content credentials. See our dedicated guide: Kraft Mailer Boxes vs Corrugated Mailer Boxes.

E-commerce packaging guide
Gifting & Seasonal Retail

Kraft pillow boxes and gable boxes are the dominant format for gift wrapping and seasonal retail packaging — Christmas hampers, wedding favors, baby shower gifts, and artisan product gift sets. The natural warmth of kraft board photographs extremely well in lifestyle and flat-lay contexts, making it the preferred packaging material for brands that rely on Instagram and Pinterest product photography as part of their acquisition strategy. Pillow boxes require no assembly tools — die-cut, fold, and tuck.

A kraft box is a packaging box made from kraft paperboard — paper produced through the kraft pulping process, which preserves more cellulose fiber, giving kraft exceptional strength. Natural kraft is left unbleached, producing the characteristic warm brown color. Kraft boxes are used by artisan brands, organic food companies, and eco-conscious DTC businesses because the brown material itself communicates sustainability and authenticity.
CustomBoxesLabs has no minimum order quantity for custom kraft boxes. You can order a single box to validate your design before committing to a production run — which we strongly recommend for natural and recycled kraft due to print behavior on the brown substrate. No setup fees apply regardless of quantity.
Natural kraft is unbleached — the warm brown color, strongest tensile strength, best eco visual signal, limited print options. Bleached kraft is whitened — full-color CMYK print capability, kraft strength retained, white appearance. Recycled kraft is made from post-consumer recycled fibers — speckled grey-brown color, highest recycled content credential, limited CMYK. Each grade has different print capabilities and sustainability certifications. See the full grade guide above.
We do not recommend full CMYK print on natural (unbleached) kraft. Cyan, magenta, and yellow inks on brown substrate produce muddy, desaturated results that will not match your screen or SBS proofs. Natural kraft is best suited for 1–2 color print (black, one brand color, or white ink). For full-color CMYK on a kraft substrate, specify bleached white kraft — which supports the same print fidelity as standard SBS paperboard. See the full print guide above.
Five styles, all available in all three kraft grades: kraft mailer box (corrugated kraft for DTC shipping), tuck-end box (straight-tuck or reverse-tuck retail carton), auto-bottom box (snap-lock base for heavier products), pillow box (curved gift-ready die-cut format), and gable box (handled peaked-roof format for gifting and food). See the box styles guide above for selection criteria.
Yes. FSC-certified substrates are available across all three kraft grades — natural, bleached, and recycled. FSC certification verifies that the paper fiber comes from responsibly managed forests. Specify FSC certification in your quote request and we confirm the certified substrate and ink options for your specification.
Natural and bleached kraft paperboard can be food-safe with FDA-compliant food-safe inks. For food-contact applications, specify food-safe inks in your quote request. Recycled kraft is generally not recommended for direct food contact due to potential contaminants in post-consumer recycled fiber. For indirect food contact (product inside inner packaging, kraft carton does not touch food), standard inks are acceptable across all grades.
Standard production lead time is 10–14 business days from artwork approval. Single-unit prototype orders complete in 5–7 business days. Rush production available — note your deadline in your quote request and we confirm feasibility within 24 hours. We strongly recommend ordering a prototype before a full production run on natural or recycled kraft.
